Home decor, jewelry, and textiles.
During the summer of 2019, I went to Kathmandu, Nepal through Notre Dame's International Summer Service Learning Program. Over the two months I was there, I worked at the Association for Craft Producers, a World Fair Trade Organization. In collaboration with the local artisans, I designed and produced home decor items, jewelry, and textile products.
During the ideation process, I did a lot of explorations with various mediums. For my textiles, a motif that really stuck with me was a circular and semicircular shape pattern I made with a dry brush on paper. Once drawn, I moved the image over to Adobe Illustrator where I put the shapes into a structured digital layout. We put this design on a silkscreen, then the artisans measured out and printed the design on to fabric. This fabric was cut and sewn together into textile products like bags, pillows, laptop cases, table runners, and more.
The result is a collection of work really inspired by the country of Nepal. Noticing the small details of my surroundings like the organic shapes of cracks in the walls or the bright colors of the local fabrics, all helped influence the direction of the items I was making. I'm honored to have had this experience and am delighted to know these items are still sold to this day in local Nepali stores.
